Spreadsheet to obtain the COE, masses and costs of a windturbine in a preliminary design stage

I have created a file to obtain estimates for the costs and masses of windturbines in a preliminary design stage with the formulas given in the WindPACT design cost and scaling model report.

The excel file has two spreadsheets: one for the land-based configuration and the other for the offshore configuration. Select the configuration of the windturbine (in other words, the materials for the tower and blades, and the configuration of the drive train) and introduce the inputs: machine rating (kW), rotor diameter (m), capacity factor, hub  height and low shaft spinning velocity (rad/s). The outputs are the masses and costs of the components of the windturbine and its cost of energy (COE).

Considerations to take into account:

  • All costs are in $2002. Costs that were in $2003 in the original report have been converted to $2002 using the general inflation rate.
  • The spreadsheets take the format of the Cost Summaries shown in the report. The formulas introduced in the cells are copied from the written report.
  • Only the inputs and configuration cells can be modified.
